republic wasteWhat is the biggest waste of money the Government in the Republic of Ireland made and why?

I was watching a T.V program on TV3 last night. It was shocking how much the government wasted. I think prefabs and the election machines were the biggest waste.

What do you think?

Thanks for the answers.
those election machines did work, I used them in my constituency, but it didn't allow for any recounts, and the craic and suspense in the RDS, maybe a few politicans didn't like being told hard facts right away, so cam up with no 'audit trail' (what about a back up print out). The actual real biggest waste in the money being paid to a member of fianna fail BROTHER to store these machines, conventionality on a 10 year contract, even though they will be destroyed long before that date. Funny how they can't get out of THAT contract. grrrr
Those electronic voting machines. Those things only ended up being a political tool, and an expensive one at that. Personally I don't understand what the problem was, they are used in other countries successfully without any problems.

Oregon Beaver: Why would we support an illegal war? Yes, it was ILLEGAL, the UN never wanted it, but that fecker Bush went ahead anyway, his excuse being he needed to get Al Qaieeda (spelling?) - but here's the crux: Osam Ibn Ladan and his Al Qaieeda cronies were in Afghanistan, so why did But start a war in Iraq? Is geography teaching that bad in the US?

US troops landed at Shannon, and we PROTESTED. We were told that those troops landing at Shannon brought in revenue for the airport and the region, and I am ashamed that Bertie Aherne's government sold its collective soul to the devil for what was essentially blood money.

So report me. GO ON.
"Ireland is neutral and only does peacrepublic wasteekeeping missions".

Pfft our neutrality is a joke compared to Sweden's or Switzerland's. Most people in Ireland don't even know about the antics the Rangers got up to in Afghan a few years back.

Biggest waste of money? God where to start.... A SECOND government jet was pretty pointless. As well as having to ship all of our politicians over to the US for Paddy's day.
dThe P-PARS integrated computing system
It was non programmable as it was over-tasked to indeterminate and conflicting flo-charting.

; same to be increase to number twenty, i.e 60, and each with limos etc.
Oh, the list would take forever to compile! The e-voting machines were one very high profile cock up. Makes you wonder why they wanted them so much....hmmmm, might have been handy for them for Lisbon and so on, no paper trail........

Wonder how much the Lisbon 2 referendum is costing the taxpayer, how many millions? You'd think the government had better things to do with our money......obviously not though.
E-voting machines...millions upon millions and we never even used them.
Wish I'd seen that...was watching RTE Last night, for a change.

Oh yes, and TD salaries. Did you hear on the news this morning that a chief something-or-order...somethirepublic wasteng to do with salaries of TDS anyway and he resigned in protest against them. Fair play to him, very brave.

A
E-voting? Or agreeing to the benchmarking process which has led to some grossly overinflated wages in the public sector.

Oh yeah and all the money wasted on decentralisation which has now been cancelled I think.
Them e-voting machines which were bought but never used also another waste of money is their high wages brian cowen gets paid more the the US president i think and that shows just how much they get overpaid!
Have ya seen the stick of metal in the middle of O'Connell street?

But yea, probably the e-voting yokes.......
Benchmarking
Its got to be the E-voting doesn't it?

Oh and the tribunals! Can't forget them can we.
I'd say the money they spend on luxuries
i agree with the lightening rod on oconnell street
Did they in any way support or contribute troops to the so-called "Iraq War"? If so that would be the biggest waste of money by far. If that in fact did NOT happen, then knowing very little about Ireland I can't readily answer.

How about: "not buying me a small but comfortable piece of property in the Irish countryside with a nice cottage on it and donating it directly to me and allowing me full passage into the Country to live and work as I desire" That's a close second unless the first proves false, in which this is by far #1. I have alot in the way of intellect to offer to the Irish people. Hey, I was even raised Roman Catholic, that's gotta count for SOMETHING! - john in Iowa
